Why You Should Move More - (Yes, Even if You Workout)

We all know the importance of a good workout, but what happens when the rest of your day is spent sitting? Spoiler alert: one hour of exercise can’t completely offset the health risks of a sedentary lifestyle! If only, right?! Let’s nerd out together, since there is a ton of science behind why incorporating more movement throughout the day is just as crucial as your gym session.

The Science of Sedentary Behavior

Studies have shown that prolonged sitting can lead to an increased risk of chronic conditions like heart disease, diabetes, and even certain cancers. Even with regular exercise, sitting for extended periods can negatively impact your health. When you sit, your body's metabolism slows down, decreasing the effectiveness of insulin and the breakdown of fats. This can contribute to weight gain and metabolic syndrome.

The Benefits of Breaking Up Sedentary Time

Boosted Metabolism: Short bursts of activity throughout the day can help keep your metabolism active, improving blood sugar control and fat breakdown – this is good…you want this!

Improved Cardiovascular Health: Moving more often helps maintain a healthy heart rate, improves circulation, and reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases – another goodie.

Enhanced Mood and Energy: Physical activity releases endorphins, which can elevate mood and increase energy levels. Moving more can reduce feelings of fatigue and enhance overall well-being. This is a great way to shake off the afternoon slumps!

Real Life Tips to Increase Daily Movement

  • Use an app or set an alarm every hour to remind you to stand up, stretch, or take a short walk.

  • Consider a standing desk or an under-desk bike to keep your body engaged even while working.

  • Take phone calls or meetings while walking. This not only gets you moving but can also spark creativity and increase productivity.

  • Always opt for the stairs or the longer way – example: park further.

  • Use your breaks to move – whether it’s walking outside or lapping the floor or even just stretching.

A workout is a fantastic way to stay fit, but it’s only part of the equation! Ready to move more? How will you make this a part of your lifestyle?
