Are Your Goals Truly Yours?

It’s that time of year again. The “New Year, New Me” energy is everywhere, and the pressure to set bigboldlife-changing goals is practically suffocating. Wanna boycott it with me?!

Before you get caught up in the goal-setting frenzy, ask this question:

Are your goals truly yours, or are they just something you’ve picked up because everyone else is doing it?

Take a moment to get real about your goals. Are they truly aligned with your values, or have you been listening to the noise of external pressures telling you what to chase?

We live in a world where “should” rules our lives. “You should be more productive.” “You should be healthier.” "You should make more money.” All of this “shoulding” can turn into a goal-setting frenzy that’s more about what other people are doing (or telling you to do) than about what will actually make you feel fulfilled.

The problem is that when your goals are based on other people’s lives (or what you think you’re supposed to do), you risk losing sight of what truly matters to you.

Sure, it might feel nice to check something off a list, but do those goals reflect your authentic desires? Do they make you feel energized and motivated, or are you just going through the motions to fit in?

The best goals are the ones that are deeply tied to your personal values—the things that truly drive you, inspire you, and get you out of bed in the morning.

Ask yourself: What do I truly care about? Is it spending more time with your family? Getting outdoors more? Learning a new skill that excites you? Or maybe it’s simply carving out time for self-care and mental health.

The key is to connect your goals to what’s meaningful to you. When your goals are driven by your own values, they feel less like a chore and more like a calling. They’ll actually matter to you, not just because it’s what you “should” do, but because it’s what you want to do. And trust me, that makes all the difference when the going gets tough and motivation starts to wane.

A Simple Exercise to Reframe Your Goals

Take a deep breath. Close your eyes for a moment. Imagine a life that you want, not a life that someone else has created for you. What would that look like?

Now, grab a pen and paper (or open a note on your phone) and ask yourself these questions:

  • What are the top 3 things that make me feel most alive? (Hint: These are often your values.)

  • What would I do with my time if I wasn’t worried about what others think?

  • What goals would I set if I wasn’t trying to impress anyone else or follow trends?

Write down your answers. Then, look at your current goals. Do they line up with these values and desires? Or do they look like goals you’ve picked up from somewhere else?

If they don’t match up, it’s time to rethink things!

Remember: If it’s not truly yours, it’s not worth chasing. Let’s make 2025 the year of your goals, not anyone else’s.
